Trenchless technology refers to methods for installing or repairing underground utilities—such as water and sewer lines, electricity, gas, and communication cables—without the need for surface excavation. ISTT is an international technical association established to promote trenchless technology. Headquartered in London, it is comprised of 28 trenchless technology associations from around the world.
In the field of trenchless technology, ongoing research and innovation are constantly producing new information. However, the engineers who need this information may not always be proficient in the language it is presented in. When information is primarily shared in English, some engineers may face language barriers that make it difficult to access the latest updates, or cause delays in obtaining important information. Expanding information across multiple countries and regions requires translation, but the process often involves significant effort, time, and cost that cannot be ignored. Additionally, due to the high level of specialization required, there are inevitably only a limited number of people with both the language skills and expertise needed for translation. In the past, the use of machine translation was also considered, but services like Google Translate were unable to accurately translate the many specialized terms, making it difficult for readers to understand the content.

■ Reasons for Introducing the Translation Proxy
Manually translating and managing a continuously updated English website into multiple languages on a daily basis simply wasn't practical alongside our other business operations. The ongoing cost of translating highly specialized content is also a significant consideration. With Translation Proxy, launching a multilingual site is easy, and whenever we update the English site, the changes are automatically reflected on the pages in other languages, which saves us a lot of operational effort.
■ About Translation Accuracy
When we previously tried Google Translate, it struggled with technical terms, which often caused the sentences to break down and made the content difficult to read. With this translation process, technical terms are properly handled, and the text is also easier to read than with Google Translate. In addition to Japanese, we have expanded to Spanish, German, and Portuguese. In every country, people have responded positively to being able to read content in their own language that was previously only available in English, and there have been no major concerns about accuracy. Our Spanish version was a big hit when we presented it at the conference in Mexico. We have received inquiries from other countries in the association about adding more languages, so we are considering expanding our services to support a wider range of languages in the future.
